Are couples with kids really happier? The research indicates “no.”

In Daniel Gilbert’s 2006 book “Stumbling on Happiness,” the Harvard professor of psychology looks at several studies and concludes that marital satisfaction decreases dramatically after the birth of the first child—and increases only when the last child has left home. He also ascertains that parents are happier grocery shopping and even sleeping than spending time with their kids.

She goes on further to state:

“In fact, no group of parents—married, single, step or even empty nest—reported significantly greater emotional well-being than people who never had children. It’s such a counterintuitive finding because we have these cultural beliefs that children are the key to happiness and a healthy life, and they’re not.”

A former UNLV law professor who signed a controversial memo regarding interrogations of suspected terrorists would not have become a federal appeals judge in Las Vegas if the Senate had known about the memo, said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada.

Five years ago, Reid and Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., promoted the confirmation of Jay Bybee to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. He was approved by the Senate on March 13, 2003 by a vote of 74-19.

But Reid says Bybee would not have been nominated if his role in defining “torture” for suspected terrorist prisoner interrogations had been known.

“I wish we had had the information about his being one of the people who prepared the torture memos,” Reid said in a brief interview.

On Nov. 6, 2006, The Rebel Yell printed a statement submitted written by Gibbons explaining why the students of UNLV should vote for him to be the next governor.

“My top priority as governor would be improving our system of education,” he wrote. “We must attract and keep more good teachers.

I propose higher teacher salaries and I specifically propose the use of merit pay to reward those educators who are doing the best job of teaching our students.”

Cha… now he wants a 14% cut for K-12 and higher ed? He has to be the worst governor of Nevada. Ever…

Here are my keys for the Wings to win the Stanley Cup.

1) the Wings must shut down Crosby and Malkin. Malkin really stepped up when Crosby was out earlier this season. In the post season, he has 9 goals and 10 assists. Wouldn’t be surprised if Babcock puts Lidstrom against Malkin and maybe Rafalski against Crosby.

2) The Penguins will look to shut down Datsyuk and Zetterburg so the time is ripe for someone to step up. I think it could be Dallas Drake’s turn to shine. Rumour has it this will be his last season, so he may want to go out with a bang. Two other players to look to are Darren McCarty and Valtteri Filppula.

3) As for goaltending, Ozzie has been great this postseason.  If he goes down, there’s always the Dominator.

4)Finally, the Wings will turn to their crafty veterans for leadership.     Holmstrom, Maltby, McCarty, Draper. Chelios, Lidstrom, Osgood and Hasek have all won the Stanley Cup while at Detroit. Look for them to draw upon their past experience to win the Cup.
