A thought about abortion

June 13, 2009

Even if Roe v. Wade is overturned and abortion is made illegal, it’s not going to stop people from having abortions. It will only drive it underground and will make it that much more unsafe.

moe. 5.26.09, Pine Mountain Amphitheater, Flagstaff, Arizona

May 27, 2009

Set One:
Sensory Deprivation Bank -> Blue Jeans Pizza, Queen Of Everything,
Four, Crab Eyes, Happy Hour Hero, Raise A Glass -> St. Augustine

Set Two:
Zed Naught Z, Moth -> Dr. Graffenburg -> Yodelittle -> Zed Naught Z ->
Moth- > meat., Johnny Lineup

No encore: After meat. Al stated that there would be no encore, but
they were taking requests. Johnny Lineup was that request.

First off, Pine Mountain Amphitheater is a great little venue. Holds about 2,000 people, but last night it was rumored that only 500 tickets were sold and I believe it. It’s situated among huge pine trees and with the clear sky last night, had a great view of the stars.

moe. was great, as usual and culminated in a great second set. Chuck and Al were trading leads and complimenting each other like only they can do. Rob’s bass added an extra dimension which allowed the songs to really get out there. Can’t wait to hear the soundboards of this one.

Great Scarlet>Fire and Warren rocked Wharf Rat. I ordered the SBD’s from Dead.net and as soon as a glitch is fixed, I’ll have the MP3’s. Can’t wait to listen to it again.

Drove part way back to Las Vegas the same night and camped out in the desert. It was a nice night to sleep under the stars.

Is print dead?

April 15, 2009

A new book by John Miedema “Slow Reading” doesn’t think so…

In the 1990s, society witnessed the mainstream integration of personal computers and the Web. For a time, it seemed likely that print, books and libraries would disappear, and perhaps literacy along with them. A generation later, we have some evidence by which to assess the reality. The analysis that follows shows that there is a close relationship between the media we use to read – books or digital technology – and the way we read and think. This is not to say that reading on screens spells the end of reading. Digital technology is often preferable for searching and scanning short snippets. However, print has endured because it is still the superior technology for reading anything of length, quality or substance. While digital technology lends itself to discovering and remixing ideas in novel ways, slow reading of books is still essential for nurturing literacy and the capacity for extended linear thought.

He also states

Print is the Next Big Thing.

Kids

April 13, 2009

I was reading another blog that linked to several interesting articles. Daniel Gilbertwrites parents trick themselves into thinking children make them happy. Dr Nattavudh Powdthavee Says social scientists find almost NO correlation between having children and happiness. Scott Stanley says marital happiness declines when a couple has their first child.

Interesting correlations.

Blame the Boomers…

February 21, 2009

I read this in the Brazen Careerist blog. The last line sums what I’ve thought about the baby boomers for years, even before the recession….

Newsflash: The baby boomers got us into this mess. They borrowed against future generations. They mishandled SEC regulations. They ignored the environment. They set up a social security system that is going to break as soon as they’re done taking from it. And they took the best education this country had to offer, and then depleted the education system for the next generation.

Obama is the first Gen-X president. And, to the surprise of all the baby boomers who have been trash-talking Gen-X forever, it’s Gen-X that will bail this country out of the mess the baby boomers got us into.

In the meantime, Generation X is the first generation in the US ever that will earn less than their parents. And Generation Y has an incredible amount of debt due to baby boomers pushing up college costs and housing costs while real wages went down.

The under-45’s are stunned by the selfishness of the baby boomer era.
